‘Back To The Future’ Coming to Star of the Seas

Marketing departments go to great lengths to create “splashy” introductions, meticulously planning and scheduling each piece of information released. Unfortunately, sometimes not all departments are on the same page. That’s what happened with Royal Caribbean’s upcoming Star of the Seas. Their production company seemed to beat them to the punch, posting auditions for the new Broadway adaptation that will be featured on their latest ship.

The Broadway Show for Star of the Seas is Back to the Future

Yesterday, an Instagram post by RCCLTalent, the production company behind Royal Caribbean’s entertainment, announced an open audition for Back to the Future: The Musical. While the post itself doesn’t specify the ship, an audition posting on their website makes it perfectly clear: “All performers hired for BACK TO THE FUTURE (3-4 performances weekly) will also perform in an original Royal Caribbean Signature Production onboard the STAR of the Seas (3-4 performances weekly).”

About Back To The Future: The Musical

Back to the Future: The Musical is a musical adaptation of the beloved 1985 film starring Michael J. Fox. It opened in Manchester, England, in February 2020 before transferring to the West End in 2021. The show made its American debut on Broadway in August 2023, with a North American tour starting in June 2024.

Unlike many of Royal Caribbean’s other Broadway offerings, Back to the Future: The Musical is not a jukebox musical; most songs are original compositions specifically created for this production. While cruise lines often lean toward jukebox musicals for their familiarity and broad appeal, the Back to the Future brand itself is likely to attract audiences on its own merit.

Star of the Seas Will Debut in August 2024

While not yet officially announced, the casting call strongly indicates that Star of the Seas will feature Back to the Future: The Musical when it debuts in August 2025. According to the listing, the Royal Theater on the ship will also host another signature production during the 7-night sailings from Port Canaveral (Orlando).
