The Royal Theater holds 1,219 guests, not much smaller than the show’s original Broadway home.

While other cruise lines have been cutting back on Broadway shows, Royal Caribbean has been doubling down, introducing new shows on each of its Icon Class ships. Icon of the Seas has “The Wizard of Oz,” Star of the Seas has “Back to the Future,” and Legend of the Seas has “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Everyone was wondering what the next production might be for the fourth Icon Class ship, Hero of the Seas.

Today, they announced that the show coming to the Royal Theater will be “The SpongeBob Musical.” It’ll be the first production of the show at sea and will be imagined for the cruise audience.

“The SpongeBob Musical” Isn’t Just for Kids

Before you start complaining that there’s too much of a focus on kids, “The SpongeBob Musical” actually ran for 327 performances at the Palace Theatre on Broadway from 2017 to 2018. During that time, it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, tying “Mean Girls” for the most nominations that season, and won the 2018 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.

The musical is based on the hit Nickelodeon show “SpongeBob SquarePants,” which debuted in 1999 and is still running today with more than 300 episodes under its belt. The musical features original songs written by artists including Cyndi Lauper, Sara Bareilles, Panic! at the Disco, John Legend, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, The Flaming Lips, and They Might Be Giants.

In the show, the underwater town of Bikini Bottom is threatened by the impending eruption of a nearby volcano, throwing its citizens into utter chaos. To save their home from total annihilation, the ever-optimistic SpongeBob SquarePants must team up with his friends Patrick and Sandy to find a solution before time runs out.

Other Entertainment Will Be Announced

Of course, like all the other Icon Class ships, it’s not just about what’s in the Royal Theater. The ship will also have shows in the AquaTheater inside the AquaDome and Absolute Zero, the onboard ice skating rink. These shows typically feature acrobatic stunts, high-diving, aerial performances, and world-class skating talent.

The names and themes of those shows have yet to be released.
