Perfect Day Mexico May Not Fully Open in 2027 After All
Royal Caribbean is busy building its next major cruise destination, Perfect Day Mexico. They’re taking over the port of Costa Maya and transforming over 200 acres into the perfect guest destination. With white-sand beaches, the longest lazy river in the world, numerous bars, restaurants, and pools, it’s going to be big.
A massive undertaking like Perfect Day Mexico takes time, but when will it be ready? In press releases, Royal Caribbean has only indicated that it will open in Fall 2027. Now, we have a bit more detailed answer.
Soft Opening for Perfect Day Mexico in 2027, Broader Opening in Early 2028
The only guidance so far on the opening of Perfect Day Mexico was “Fall 2027,” which is a pretty broad target. Today, though, we got more insight during Royal Caribbean’s Q1 2026 investor earnings call. Unfortunately, it means a grand opening in 2027 doesn’t look likely.
We obviously have announced, I think we said that we’ll be having a soft opening in Q4 2027. As we move into 2028, we’ll be fully opening the whole experience.”
– Michael Bayley President and CEO Royal Caribbean
This is contrary to a statement made to the media in December 2025 by Royal Caribbean Senior Vice President and Chief Production Innovation Officer Jay Schneider. He said, “The plan is still to open it all at once instead of phases. We’re going to open it all at once. I think at one point we were going to open [Perfect Day at CocoCay] all at once, and then it became a phased approach. So yes, our ambition is all at once.”
It should be noted that currently, no itinerary lists “Perfect Day Mexico” as a destination, keeping the Costa Maya name to avoid overpromising to future cruisers.
Bumps in the Road
Earlier this year, construction was halted due to a lawsuit by Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (PROFEPA), the agency that enforces environmental laws and regulations. They stopped demolition of parts of the area due to claims raised by environmental activists about drainage and sewerage management. But in March, a judge lifted that order and construction resumed.
Today, leadership said that construction has resumed and that the “the project’s generally on track.”
