Royal Caribbean Starts Construction on Fifth Icon Class Ship
The largest class of cruise ships in the world has another one coming down the pipeline. Today, Royal Caribbean held a ceremony to commemorate the first steel cut for the new ship. The event took place at Meyer Turku in Finland. It is the massive shipyard that has already constructed Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, and is currently working on Legend of the Seas and the soon-to-be-named Icon Class #4.
The initial cut of steel kicks off the official start of production of a new ship and marks the beginning of a multiyear journey. During this process, thousands of experts across design, naval engineering, architecture, and more will work together to build one of the biggest ships in the world. The ship is expected to debut in 2028.
What Will Be the Fifth Icon Class Ship’s Name?
Other than the fact that construction has begun and the ship is expected to launch in 2028, Royal Caribbean did not share much more information.
| Icon of the Seas | Jan 2024 |
| Star of the Seas | Aug 2025 |
| Legend of the Seas | July 2026 |
| Icon Class #4 | 2027 |
| Icon Class #5 | 2028 |
If we look at the trademarks Royal Caribbean has already filed, here are some of the possible names for the fifth ship, or potentially the fourth ship, which has not yet been named.
These names were trademarked at the same time as Star of the Seas in 2022, and some of them fit well with the naming theme of the class so far, including Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas, and Legend of the Seas.
- Nova of the Seas
- Sun of the Seas
- Marquee of the Seas
- Titan of the Seas
- Majesty of the Seas
- Hero of the Seas
- Monarch of the Seas
Royal Caribbean has also trademarked a few additional names after those listed above. Idol of the Seas may fit within the same theme, but the rest lean more toward emotions and would likely be intended for a different class of ships entirely.
- Happy of the Seas
- Fun of the Seas
- Idol of the Seas
- Love of the Seas
- Joy of the Seas
Last Official Icon Class Order, For Now
The fifth Icon Class ship is the last one that Royal Caribbean has officially placed an order for so far. The cruise line has also reserved options to build a sixth and seventh ship, meaning space has been set aside at the shipyard should Royal Caribbean decide to move forward with those additional vessels.
But that’s not the only ships being built. The seventh Oasis Class ship is also under construction at a different shipyard, Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France and is also set to debut in 2028.
